Whether you just started a brand new site or have had one for a while, an important aspect on website management is page creation. Our WordPress 101 guide will help you easily find your way around things. The great thing about WordPress as a website manager is that creating a new page is just a click away.
Step 1: Log into WordPress Backend
For most sites, to access your WordPress Admin area you add /wp-admin or /wp-login.php to the end of your sites URL and hit “Enter” on your keyboard. There are ways of changing this to make your site more secure, but if you’re just beginning, having a solid username and password will make your site secure.
Once the login screen loads, you will be asked for your WordPress Username and Password which you set up when you first installed WordPress. Add those to gain access to your WordPress Dashboard.
Step 2: Pages
Once you’re in your sites Dashboard, all the options you will need to work with are all on the left sidebar. Since we are focusing on creating a new Page, find the option that is called “Pages”. When you hover over this option or click on it, you will see at least two new options appear. If you want to work on an already created page, click on “All Pages”. Since we are creating a new page, click on “Add New”.
Tip: If you are in the Pages area, there will always be an “Add New” button beside the Title to create a new page anytime.
Step 3: Editing/Customizing your New Page
Add a title. This will end up becoming your H1 tag which is what search engines use as the title of your page as well. Once you enter a title, WordPress creates a unique URL for the new page you are creating. You can change this to anything you want once created as well.
In the big white box after you’ve entered a title is the content box. This is what is going to go on your page as content. Images, videos, and text will all go here to create your page. If you are using the “Visual” tab at the top of that box, you will have tools similar to those used in Microsoft Word. If you’re more comfortable with html coding, you can use the “Text” tab and use html to create your page.
Step 4: Publish Your New Page
Your page does not go live onto your site until you are ready to click on the blue button on the right sidebar titled “Publish”. Once you are ready to push your page out to the public, the second you click on Publish, your page will have been created. Anyone with the URL or a link to the page will be able to see it.
Step 5: Add your Page to your Menu
Once your page is live, you will want a way to access your new page. This means you will have to add it to your menu. To do this, you will have to look back to the left sidebar of your WordPress Dashboard and look for the option titled “Appearance”.
Once hovered over or clicked on, you will see a list of new options, the one you want to click on is “Menus”.
In the Menus area, you want to find the dropdown at the top of the page to select the menu you are wanting to add the new page to. Your site might just have one menu to choose from, but others might have 3 or more. Once you choose the menu you want it on and load it up, you will see all the menu options in square buttons going down the page. On the left side of this area is the section that allows you to add new pages. Find your page, click on “Insert to Menu” and it will show up at the bottom of the menu.
WordPress makes it very easy to manage menus by making them all click and drag options. Drag the new page to where you like it in the menu and then click on “Save”. This will update your site instantly and the next time you are on your site, the new page will be in your menu and viewable.
